The RC5 Product Architecture wall: boards, three screens, and models on the table below
Palimpsest, and four rounds of Khora in timber, London
Exhibition + Architecture
The Bartlett Autumn Show is the final-project exhibition of the Architectural Design MArch at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Palimpsest was shown in RC5 Product Architecture: a wall of boards and screens, a table of 3D-printed connectors and a wall of white study models.
Beside them, on a plinth, stood the timber itself. Khora is the design assistant built on Palimpsest's language-model system and trained on the studio's own stock of timber. Each piece on the plinth is a design it made in a different round of training, so that a visitor can see, one after another, how the assistant changed from round to round: from a chair that only has to stand, to a chair that is well made, to structures built from timber that really exists and scored on whether they can be built.
Khora 1 taught a language model to write assembly code for chairs, desks and traditional joints, block by block. In Khora 2 assembly became physics: blocks attract, separate and settle until a chair holds together on its own. Khora 3, named for the three qualities of architecture (Venustas, Firmitas, Commodity), evolved its designs, a staircase improved over twenty generations in three staged phases, and gave a family of canopies and shelters. Khora 4 works from real timber stock: it derives each design step by step and scores it, and a design passes only if every member comes from timber that exists in the stock, no member is used twice and nothing is left floating.
